Text

Side by side and lined up, with the changes inside each line and an overview bar. Syntax highlighting for 26 languages, and rules that ignore case, whitespace, comments or text you choose. Edit either side, copy changes across and save in the encoding you pick.

Folders and sync

Compare large folder trees quickly, by content or by your rules, with filters for what to skip. Sync with a preview first: update, two-way or mirror. Anything removed goes to the Trash.

Three-way merge

Left, base and right above an output you can edit. Take a side, both or the base for each conflict, or type the fix yourself, then save. Works as git mergetool.

Tables

CSV and TSV files compared cell by cell. Columns match by header, rows by order or by a key column, with a tolerance for numbers.

Images

Side by side, as a difference map or as an overlay, with a tolerance for tiny changes. PNG, JPEG, HEIC, GIF, TIFF and more.

Binary files

A hex view that lines up inserted and deleted bytes, so one extra byte does not mark the rest of the file as different.

git and the Terminal

Use it as git difftool and mergetool, open comparisons from the Terminal with bvc, or have bvc write a report without opening the app.

Finder

Select two files or folders, Control-click and choose Compare with Beaver Compare. Or pick one item as the left side and compare another one with it later.

Built for big jobs

Files with a million lines scroll smoothly, and in our tests two folders of 100,000 files each compare in about a second on an Apple silicon Mac.

Good to know

  • Free, with no account and no ads.
  • Needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
  • Beaver Compare checks for updates by itself, at most once a day, and installs one only when you agree. Turn this off in Settings with “Automatically check for updates”, or choose Beaver Compare ▸ Check for Updates… at any time.
  • Your files stay on your Mac. The update check is the only time Beaver Compare goes online: see Privacy.
  • Using Beaver Compare means you accept the Beaver Compare License Agreement.
